Online PAYG phone upgrades at CPW

without comments

Now you can upgrade your phone online using Carphone Warehouse website as long as you have been with an operator for 6 months.

On May 17, Carphone Warehouse launched a new service for Pay As You Go SIM card users which will enable them to upgrade their phones to models like Nokia Lumia 520 or Samsung Galaxy Ace. PAYG upgrade is an offer that lets you get a new phone at a discounted phone, however, you will need to have a PAYG SIM card from one of the main operators (O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone or Virgin) and be their customer for 6 months. The terms and conditions vary depending on operator, but generally you will need to have a PAYG SIM card for half a year and use it once or twice in that period. If you eligible for that offer, you may get a new phone with up to 40% discount (usually around 10-15%) using Carphone Warehouse website.

Online PAYG

To sum up, the benefits of PAYG upgrade is that you can keep the same tariff, the same phone number and get a new phone at a better price. It sounds like a fair deal, and it has been available at Carphone Warehouse outlets before but you should remember that you will get better discounts if you request an upgrade online.

CPW seems to have other PAYG offers in the pipeline that will be launched later this year. Carphone Warehouse Europe CEO Roger Taylor said: ‘Prepay remains a big part of our business. As a specialist we see this as our role to be strong in contract, Sim-only and prepay.’

Use your phone as a credit card

phone as a credit card

phone as a credit card

Barclaycard is the first bank to launch a new payment method which changes your mobile phone into a credit card. The system is called PayTag, and it is basically a sticker (smart card) that you can attach to your phone to pay using NFC technology. Use your phone as a credit card. PayTag is about one third of a credit card and is an extension to Barclaycard customer’s account. Thanks to it you can make small payments (up to £15) over a contactless terminal without entering PIN code or signature. The bank claims that the technology is 100 per cent fraud proof and will be an alternative to NFC payment solutions that are being developed by banks all over the world. The biggest advantage is that you will not have to upgrade your mobile phone to use it, because it works on every mobile. Among the retailers that will accept such a method of payment we will see McDonald’s, Boots, Tesco or WH Smith

PAYG mobile phones will be dearer

PAYG mobile phones

Two major British operators, mainly O2 and Everything Everywhere, are going to increase the prices of PAYG mobile phones (bought with PAYG sim cards). This move is a response to Ofcom’s new rules which will lower mobile termination rates (MTRs). This rates are the fees that operators charge for connecting a call from a different network. The calculations show that MTRs are worth around £800 million for the biggest British operators.

The big UK service providers decided to remove subsidies from PAYG phones to balance the money lost from lower MTRs. This will mean that most of prepaid phones will be more expensive in the coming months and mostly likely this trend will continue, as the biggest operators focus currently more on contracts than on PAYG sim card deals.
