Mobile World Congress 2013 took place in Barcelona on 25-28 February. This world’s biggest mobile event annually unveils and presents mobile technology innovations and gives the opportunity to explore new mobile horizons. Although many smartphones and tablets had been announced before, there are still a few which had their premiere during the Mobile World Congress 2013. Two of them deserve to be mentioned – ASUS FonePad and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0.

First, ASUS FonePad which is a tablet with the ability to make phone calls so there is no more need to carry two devices. ASUS equipped it with 7-inch display packing in 1,280×800 pixels. Inside, there is an Intel Atom Z2420 processor, clocked at 1.2GHz and backed up by 1GB of RAM. FonePad offers users 16GB of space as well as microSD slot supporting cards up to 32GB. Its battery is said to live for nine hours. What is more, FonePad is made from metal, but is quite light with its 340g and can be comfortably used with only one hand. It’s running on not the latest version of Android – 4.1 Jelly Bean but has some useful applications, such as SuperNote Lite, which is for making handwritten notes and doodling. ASUS also offers 5GB of cloud storage on the Asus WebStorage. As a smartphone it is equipped with noise-canceling microphone. Fonepad is planned to be released in the UK between April and June and the cost will be about £179.

Next, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 which is another tablet with the ability to make phone calls. It has 8-inch display and a screen resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels. Despite its 8 inches, Note is even lighter with its 338g than its Asus counterpart. It’s equipped with Samsung’s Exynos processor – a quad-core version clocked at 1.6GHz and 2GB RAM of internal storage which can be topped out at 32GB through a microSD slot. It runs on Android 4.1.2. The device has the S Pen that can be used to control the Note’s physical buttons and that is why now there is no need to swap between stylus and fingers when using it.

In addition, Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is capable of making phone calls and sending short messages. Users can also surf the Internet while making a phone call. The release is expected in May or June
